Drinking lemon water every morning has been a part of my daily routine for a number of years now and I find that even when I have days where I don’t eat as healthy as I normally do, I always manage to keep this habit up because it’s so simple to do.
Every morning when I wake up before I eat anything, I pour warm water in a 32 Oz mason jar and squeeze in juice from half a lemon and sip it for about 15-20 minutes while I set out my intentions for the day and do my affirmations before I start my day.
I’ve gotten so used to this routine that when I wake up I can’t WAIT to make my warm lemon water and as soon as I take that first sip I have that “aaaahhh” blissful moment.
It’s so refreshing, soothing and reviving! Plus it helps me make better healthy food choices for the rest of the day when I start my day this way.
Lemons are a superfood! They’re rich in nutrients and have incredible health and beauty benefits.Click here to check out other everyday superfoods. That’s why I make sure to drink lemon water upon awakening but I don’t just stop there… I also add fresh lemon juice here and there, any chance I get throughout the day.
This includes in my green smoothies, salads, nourish bowls and even on snacks, such as avocado toast that I enjoy from time to time. Lemons are one of my top favourite fruits and I always make sure I have plenty of them around.
They’re cheap and easily accessible, which is a bonus considering they happen to be one of the most cleansing and detoxifying fruits on the planet.
Anyway, if squeezing lemon juice in anything and everything is not your thing, I still suggest you at least make the habit of having the lemon water every morning, first thing. And No it doesn’t have to be a big 32 Oz jar like the way I make it, I’m just crazy.
No, I’m kidding, I just love hydrating my body first thing. Hydration is so important guys, I’ll talk more about it below.
So anyway, even if you make the habit of drinking a small glass of warm water with a squeeze of half a lemon every morning, you will still reap the benefits lemon water provide.
Below I’ve listed the top 5 benefits:
1.Hydrates the body
Like I mentioned above, hydration is very important for overall health and beauty. When you wake up from a nights sleep your body is naturally dehydrated.
The great thing about drinking lemon water is its combination of the warm water with added lemon juice, which is fantastic for hydrating the body first thing.
The typical morning beverages most people drink such as coffee or tea with milk and sugar doesn’t hydrate the body on a cellular level compared to the way lemon water does. Lemon water is also cleansing but gentle on your system.
Although lemons are an acid fruit, when consumed and metabolised, they have a very alkalizing effect. Drinking lemon water first thing helps purify the body’s internal system by flushing out toxins and cleansing your insides.
3.Boosts the immune system
Lemons are loaded with vitamin C, which is great for fighting colds. They also have powerful antibacterial and antiviral properties, which all contribute to strengthening the immune system, helping to keep the body healthy.
4.Keeps the skin youthful and radiant
Lemons cleanse and purify the blood, which keeps the skin clear and radiant. The antioxidant found in vitamin C helps form collagen and combat free radical damage, which gets rid of blemishes, fine lines and slows down the ageing process.
5.Aids in weight loss
Drinking water and staying hydrated boosts metabolism, which is great for aiding weight loss but adding lemon juice is a bonus as lemons aid digestion and are known to curb appetite which suppresses hunger cravings.
By the way, you will not lose weight and achieve great health just by drinking lemon water alone.
Drinking lemon water is just one healthy habit to adopt and from there you have to follow up with other healthy habits like drinking green smoothies every day, eliminating animal foods from your diet and adopting a whole plant based diet instead as well as doing regular exercise to lose weight and maintain a healthy body.
